CLAY MODELLING COURSES

AIMS These courses are suitable for beginners and more experienced alike. Under the tutor’s guidance you will be exploring the techniques of modelling clay using a life-model, as reference either as a nude study or portrait study. You will cover expression in sculpture, modelling and measuring techniques, understanding proportions of the body and some basic anatomy. You could choose to model in coarse grogged clay allowing your sculpture to be fired some time after the course is finished and sent on to you, at extra cost. Alternatively you could opt for staying on two days and learning how to make a silicon rubber mould then use it to make a casting of your portrait head in another material, plaster, wax for bronze, resin. A Professional working sculptor and an artist who have been creating artworks for decades, with previous teaching in higher education experience tutor the courses.

CLASS SIZE Maximum of x6 students working with John McKenna ARBS or Peter Scott Tudhope MA (Fine Art).

DURATION x4 days course, extra cost option for students (only space for 2 though!) to stay in self-catering accommodation in our holiday annexe cottage adjacent to the studio workshop or stay at a local B&B. HOURS approx start 9:30AM until 12:30PM, break for lunch, then start back 1:00PM - 4PM, working later sometimes if deemed necessary.

PROGRAM DAY 1 Studio induction, then set up for working with the life or portrait model. DAYs 2 & 3 working on your sculpture. DAY 4 Hollowing out for firing or start of Silicon rubber mould making process for the follow on course.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS This is not heavy work but you need to be in general good health. You will need old clothes/overalls when working with the clay.

COSTS of the clay modelling courses vary but start at £340 (incl of VAT). The fee covers your tuition and all materials used on the course to make a clay sculpture. Course cost with accommodation in our cottage 5 nights, £485 (incl VAT). There are two rooms available as S/C accommodation in our annexe cottage. If you opt to fire your clay sculpture in our kilns you will need to pay postage (TBA) on your sculpture once it is finished or come back and collect it.

MOULDMAKING You could make a flexible silicon rubber mould, an expensive moulding material but very good to use for high quality production moulds. From your silicon mould you could take many castings in a variety of materials. To stay on and make a silicon rubber mould of your clay sculpture over the extra x3 days will cost £285 (incl VAT) or £365 3 nights (incl VAT) in the cottage - includes all materials.
