INTRODUCTION TO FABRICATED STEEL SCULPTURE

AIMS This course is suitable for beginners and the more experienced alike. You will be introduced to a steel fabrication workshop and the associated metal working machinery. By the end of the course you should have a little working knowledge of metal manipulation and basic MIG/TIG welding. You can make a stainless steel sculpture, which on completion needs no coatings or maintenance and by Day 5 you should complete your steel sculpture for you to take home or have sent on to you. You will have intensive tutor contact to gain sculptural fabrication knowledge and progress your artwork quickly.

CLASS SIZE Maximum of x4 students working with a professional sculptor and prolific public artist, John McKenna ARBS.

DURATION x5 days residential course there is an option at extra cost of staying in self catering accommodation in our holiday annexe cottage adjacent to the studio workshop - 2 rooms only. You can stay in the cottage with a fellow student or you can opt to stay in a local hotel or B&B if you wish. You can have an evening meal with us in the farmhouse 'en famille' by prior arrangement. Cottage for 6 nights £150/person.

HOURS start 9:30AM until 12:30PM, break for lunch, then start back 1:30PM - 4:30PM, working later sometimes if deemed necessary to finish work.

NOTE This is a course for absolute beginners, do not be daunted by some of the machines or phrases below, it is primarily a 'hands on' course and with the almost one to one tuition you will have plenty of information and explanation to progress you through the course.

PROGRAM DAY 1 Induction into the metal fabrication workshop, H&S briefings and be issued with your Personal protection wear. Next - meet the machinery - bending & section rollers, plasma cutter, 3 phase saw & pillar drill, cut off saw, guillotine. You will be instructed how to use these machines, you will use angle grinders, disc cutters and spend an afternoon on MIG welding, to get a feel for this welding technique which you will employ to make your sculpture. DAY 2 Concept sketching, modelmaking and planning the sequence for making your sculpture, designing the armature and making method. DAYS 3 & 4 Working on your sculpture. DAY 5 Finishing & Polishing.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS This is not heavy work but you need to be in general good health. This is primarily a practical course, with pertinent theory delivered alongside. You will need old clothes/overalls and safety boots are essential. All other safety equipment will be supplied.

COST of the steel Sculpture course is £565 (incl of VAT) The fee covers your tuition, all materials used on the course to make a 'table top' sized sculpture and lunch. You will need to pay postage on your sculpture if you can not take it with you.
